An Award You Can Only Earn by Building Something New
For those unfamiliar with the program, SAIL Magazine’s Top 10 Best Boats is one of the most respected annual awards in the sailing world. Each year, SAIL’s review team considers every new model debuted at American boat shows — typically around 40 nominees — and narrows the field to just 10 winners through hands-on sea trials, walkthroughs, and extensive deliberation.
Models aren’t compared against each other but evaluated on how well they fulfil their own design brief, with recognition given to innovation, smart engineering, and exceptional execution.
The key point is this: you can only be nominated when you bring a genuinely new model to market. These aren’t awards you campaign for annually. They’re earned by designing and building something that stands out in a given year — and the 580 did exactly that.
What the Judges Said
SAIL’s review team was impressed across the board. They praised the 580’s performance under sail, calling it “a cut above,” and highlighted the boat’s lightweight construction — carbon-reinforced structure, closed-cell foam core hulls, and handcrafted foam core furniture — all engineered to keep weight down where it matters most. They noted the 580’s ability to sail at wind speed in moderate breeze and point well for a big cat thanks to her high-aspect daggerboards.
But it wasn’t just about speed. The judges recognised the depth of customisation that Balance offers, noting that the choices an owner makes with a semi-custom build truly shape the final boat — and that with Balance’s experience making comfortable cats with a performance edge, any version of the 580 is going to be an excellent sailer. The innovative VersaHelm, the open-plan cockpit-to-salon living, and the sheer adaptability of the interior layout all earned mention.
The review was written by Zuzana Prochazka, one of the industry’s most experienced testers, who joined Phil Berman aboard Hull #2 for a sea trial on the Chesapeake after the boat had just completed a transatlantic passage on her own bottom. That’s a detail worth pausing on — no controlled marina demo, but a boat that had already proven herself across an ocean.
A Perfect Track Record from St. Francis
Here’s what makes this moment especially meaningful: the Balance 580 is only the second model to come out of our St. Francis Bay yard. The first was the Balance 526, which won Cruising World’s Import Boat of the Year and Best Full-Size Multihull Over 50 Feet back in 2017 — widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the industry.
Two models built. Two major award winners. That’s not a coincidence — it’s the result of a design philosophy and build quality that has been refined over more than a decade of collaboration between Phil Berman, Du Toit Yacht Design, and the skilled craftsmen who bring every Balance to life.

What Makes the 580 Special
For those encountering the 580 for the first time, here’s what you need to know. At 58 feet and a light displacement of just 36,800 lbs, she’s lighter than many production catamarans 12 feet shorter — a testament to her hand-laminated, vacuum-bagged e-glass epoxy construction with closed-cell foam core and targeted carbon reinforcement. A full-carbon XP version is also available for owners who want to push the envelope even further.
Her Hall Spars carbon rig reaches 90 feet and carries over 2,200 square feet of upwind sail area. Three headsails on electric furlers make gear changes fast and manageable for short-handed crews — exactly the kind of practical, real-world thinking that defines a Balance.
Below the waterline, her Integrel-powered VersaDrive hybrid propulsion system and 51 kWh lithium battery bank, topped up by 4.4 kW of solar, mean she can cruise cleaner and quieter with reduced diesel consumption. She’s pre-wired for both 110V and 220V shore power, ready to call any port in the world home.
And above all, she’s semi-custom. As Phil Berman puts it: there are no stock boats. Every 580 is built around the owner who will sail her.
