In 2023 Gary and Katie, a Seattle couple and lifelong Pacific Northwest sailors, made their retirement dream real. They bought a Balance 482 and named her Apogee.
They chose the 482 for a simple reason: it’s a boat that does two things well at once. It’s easy enough for two people to sail comfortably, but capable enough for real ocean passages. That balance of livability and performance was exactly what they needed for the next chapter.
Built for a Crew of Two
Once Apogee was theirs, they got to work. Every upgrade was chosen with intention, not to add complexity, but to improve safety, reliability, and handling for a couple sailing on their own. Nothing was there for show. Everything served the mission of making offshore passages safer and daily life aboard easier.
One upgrade in particular stands out. Drawing on decades of experience at Microsoft, Gary designed a genuinely connected onboard system, advanced Starlink and Peplink networking, thoughtful integration between onboard equipment, and remote monitoring and security that let them keep an eye on Apogee’s systems from anywhere in the world. Putting Her to the Test
The upgrades paid off. Apogee carried her owners across the Atlantic on a safe, seamless crossing, then through three seasons cruising the Caribbean, nearly 9,000 nautical miles in all. Fast, comfortable, and confidence-building, she was everything they’d hoped she’d be when they bought her.
Along the way, something else happened: they fell for the cruising lifestyle itself. Three seasons in, their skills and their ambitions had grown right along with their sea time.
A Boat Cared For, Not Battered
Throughout it all, Apogee’s owners treated her less like a vehicle for adventure and more like a long-term investment worth protecting. Sails came off and went into air-conditioned storage every off-season. Maintenance was proactive, not reactive. The goal was never to see how hard they could push her, it was to keep her in the same condition she was in the day they took ownership.
The result is a boat that carries her miles well. She’s been to the Caribbean and back, but she wears it more like a boat that’s been thoughtfully used than one that’s been through it.
