Build for Safety: The Thinking Behind Every Balance Catamaran

At Balance, safety is not something we bolt on at the end. It is designed into the boat from the first line drawn, and it is built into every laminate, joint, and system that follows. In a recent conversation, Balance president Phil Berman walked through what that really means, and it starts with an idea that surprises a lot of sailors: performance and safety are the same thing.

Performance is safety

“Performance is safety,” Phil says, and he does not hedge on it. A faster boat spends less time exposed to weather. The ability to sail to windward keeps you off a lee shore. And with modern weather routing, real speed gives you the option to sail around a system rather than sit and take it. Managed properly, a performance catamaran is a safer catamaran. Almost everything else in the Balance build philosophy follows from that single premise.

Carbon, used intelligently

Carbon has been standard in Balance construction from the beginning, and the reason is simple. Used in the right places, it lets us lighten the boat and strengthen it at the same time. By building carbon into the key structural areas, we can reduce laminate schedules while keeping the same engineering strength we would otherwise get from layering on more glass and more resin.

 

Our new models take that thinking a step further with what we call Carbon Core. The entire substructure of the boat is now built in carbon: the floorboards, the daggerboard trunks and daggerboards, the partition panels beneath the floorboards, the bulkheads, and the hat track beams. It is an intelligent use of the material because it lightens and stiffens the structure without the noisiness you get from a full carbon hull. The result is greater payload capacity and more speed, all at once. It comes at a higher cost, and on our larger boats owners can even specify an all-carbon coach roof to save more weight, but the value is hard to argue with. It is a genuinely smart way to build a performance cruising boat, and we are excited to sail the first of these Carbon Core boats.

Building for safety means building for quality

Design and engineering only matter if they survive contact with the real world. That is the whole point of building for safety, taking the design and the engineering and applying it to the fabrication so that good ideas become reliable boats.

 

In Cape Town we run an assembly line for the 464 and the 502. The boats sit on rails and move from station to station through the production cycle, with teams that specialize at each station and a QC leader assigned to every one. Those QC leaders walk the floor in white coats, boards in hand, checking the laminations, the fairing, and every stage of the build. There is deliberate redundancy in the process, too. Each team leader runs an initial quality check on their own work, and then the QC leader comes through and checks the checkers. Every boat goes through a double rating before the final quality process, which happens on the water at sea trials, and even then it never really stops.

 

It is not the most efficient way to build a boat, and we know that. We almost certainly put more labor hours into our boats than any of our competitors. But that is exactly where the difference shows up, in the level of fairing and in the details.

The joint you cannot see

One of the first things experienced builders notice about a Balance is what they cannot find. They look for the hull-deck joint and it is not there. Most production boats drop a deck onto a hull and finish it with a rub rail or a bolted joint because it is fast. We do it the old-fashioned way, like a racing boat. The deck is glassed on the inside, glassed over the outside, bonded, and then faired until hull and deck become a single monostructure. It gives the boat a racing feel and a level of integrity you can sense the moment you are underway.

A boat that is solid as rock

The same philosophy runs through the interior. Our bulkheads are firmly glassed to both sides of the hulls, and every piece of furniture is fitted into the boat as one piece, rather than built at some offsite, IKEA-style operation and slammed into place, which is closer to how production boats are finished. Where all of this shows up is in the quiet. A Balance is a squeak-free boat because nothing is floating. Between the Carbon Core, the way the bulkheads are bonded, and the built-in joinery, the structure is stiff, light, and solid as rock.

Partners we can stand behind

No builder makes everything, and we are no exception. A Balance carries components from around thirty OEM partners, from Harken winches to hatches, ports, and pumps. We evaluate every one of them on two things, the product and the service behind it, and both have to be good. We have let go of good products because the service was poor, and it has genuinely been hard at times to part with a supplier whose service was excellent but whose product was not. We cannot warrant a product we did not make, but if a component lets an owner down, we step in and help. That is part of building for safety too.

Someone always answers the phone

Being safe and feeling safe are not the same thing, and both matter enormously when you are offshore. Our owners know they can call us seven days a week. If they cannot reach someone in South Africa, they can reach someone in the United States or in Europe, and we will pick up and help, whether they need advice, support, or simply someone to talk them through a problem. Sometimes that is the whole job. A sailor a long way from land needs to trust the boat beneath them, and they need to trust that the people who built it have their back. That combination, a boat you can rely on and a team you can always reach, is what building for safety really comes down to.
