At Balance Catamarans Cape Town, Thabit Jassiem isn’t just building boats — he’s shaping dreams, he says.
As head of carpentry at Balance’s Cape Town factory, Thabit leads with a rare combination of precision, humility, and heart. For him, this work is more than a career. It’s a calling steeped in family, faith, and an unshakable belief in craftsmanship as a way of life.
Thabit’s path to the factory floor began long before he picked up his first chisel. Raised in the Cape Flats, his love for woodworking was sparked in primary school and nurtured in a community where hands-on skill was both survival and art form. His father — a self-taught builder — passed down a sense of prie in his work as well as knowledge.
“He was always proud of me,” Thabit recalls. “That’s what keeps me pushing.”
Today, that pride lives on in every curved bulkhead, every joint seamlessly aligned. As a manager, Thabit brings not just technical expertise, but empathy — he understands the worker’s experience because he lived it. His leadership is built from the bottom up, rooted in shared respect and a deep belief in the power of teamwork.
“For me, it’s about building someone’s dream—and that’s what it’s all about,” Thabit says. Each catamaran crafted by his team is a balance of form and function, performance and beauty. Every piece of timber is hand-selected. Every fitting, flush. Every interior, infused with the care of someone who sees carpentry not just as construction, but as storytelling.
At Balance, customers have some options to customize interiors and that suits Thabit just fine. He sees each project as a canvas, an opportunity to leave behind a signature that quietly says: this was made with care.
It’s been a year since Thabit’s father passed away, but his influence remains ever-present. The lessons — spoken and unspoken — continue to shape Thabit’s decisions. “He’s still my role model,” Thabit says, emotion clearly woven through his words. “His story wasn’t easy. But it gave me the strength to write mine differently.”
That quiet determination has become his north star. Through his work, Thabit honors his father’s legacy — not in monuments, but in helping make the vessels that sail the world feel and look like home too for owners.
But Thabit’s sense of purpose goes beyond the workshop. As a father himself, he’s building more than boats, he notes, he’s building a life rooted in values he hopes to pass on. “My children don’t need to follow the same path,” he says, “but I want them to know where we came from, and what’s possible.”
He also sees potential far beyond his own journey. Thabit believes the boatbuilding industry could be transformative for South Africa — especially in job creation. “This industry can be a game changer,” he says. “And I want to be part of that.”
He’s already begun laying the groundwork, aiming to expand his carpentry team, mentor rising talent, and help position Balance Catamarans as not just a world-class builder — but as a place where men and women can work with pride..
Thabit Jassiem’s story is a quiet triumph—a testament to how personal passion, when channeled with purpose, can ripple far beyond one person’s life. His journey from humble beginnings to leading one of the most respected carpentry teams in the marine world speaks to the power of tradition, transformation, and belief.
And as every Balance Catamaran leaves the Cape Town docks, it carries a little piece of Thabit with it in his story, his craft, and his dream for the future. Time to set sail.
