A lunchtime walk through the Balance Catamarans production line reveals a fleet in the making — and the end of an era.
There’s something quietly extraordinary about a boatyard at lunchtime. The tools are down, the spray guns are idle, and for a few precious minutes you can actually hear yourself think above the hum of production. It was during one such pause that we grabbed the chance to take a stroll through the Cape Town yard and share what’s happening on the line right now — and there is a lot happening.
Painting Is Underway
Our first stop was aboard one of the Balance 464s currently making its way through the production sequence. This boat has already reached the painting phase — a milestone that puts it well ahead of the curve and firmly on track for a 2026 launch. With four boats ahead of it in the queue, the countdown is real. It won’t be long before this hull hits the water.
A Factory Full of 464s and 502s
Step back from the first 464 and the view is genuinely impressive: a lineup of 464s and 502s in various stages of construction, each one a little further along than the last. The production line tells the story of a build program in full swing.
Two design updates stand out as you walk the line:
The 464’s new skylight. A central skylight has been added to the coachroof of the 464, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. More natural light, better airflow, and a noticeably more liveable saloon — it’s the kind of change that sounds simple but transforms the experience of being below deck.
The 502’s panoramic windows. The 502 has done away with the centre mullion in its saloon windows, and the result speaks for itself. An almost uninterrupted 180-degree view sweeps across the entire saloon — the kind of outlook that makes you forget you’re looking through a window at all.
And if you’re wondering about headroom on the smaller 502 — a thoughtful extra step-down has been incorporated into the design, giving even this compact model a sense of space that belies its footprint.
The Finishing Bay: Where Boats Become Yachts
Further along the production line, the finishing bay is where the transformation really happens. Raw hulls give way to fully realised vessels as the lounge seating goes in, the cabinetry gets its final touches, and all the small details that distinguish a boat from a home are carefully added. Watching a hull move through this phase is a reminder of just how much skilled craftsmanship goes into every Balance that leaves the yard.
The End of an Era: The Last Ever 442
This is the news that will resonate with many in the sailing community. Tucked into the second-to-last station at the back of the factory sits Hull 30 — the very last Balance 442 that will ever be built.
It’s a momentous moment. The 442 has been a cornerstone of the Balance lineup, and seeing the final hull in construction marks the close of a significant chapter. A proper send-off is coming: the last-ever 442 launch celebration is planned for the coming weeks, and it promises to be one worth marking.
From Molds to the Water
Toward the front of the production line, the newest hulls are just emerging from their molds and entering first-phase construction — the point where individual components are glassed together and the skeleton of a future boat begins to take shape. It’s here that you get the clearest sense of the architecture: bulkheads, partitioning, cabinetry, and structural elements all being assembled before fairing and paint bring everything to life.
2025 and 2026: Landmark Years for Balance
Watching the production line in full flow, it’s hard not to feel the momentum. New models entering production, a beloved model reaching its final hull, and a yard full of craftspeople working with remarkable skill and dedication — 2025 and 2026 are shaping up to be landmark years for Balance Catamarans.
To every person in that factory — the hundreds of hands that cut, glass, fair, paint, fit, and finish each boat — thank you. These aren’t just products coming off a line. They’re the result of extraordinary collective effort, and the sailors who will one day take the helm of these hulls will be the beneficiaries of your work.
