The first hull of the Balance 442 line, Umoya, meaning “wind” in Zulu, pairs blue-water performance with an interior built for real living aboard. Designed by Philadelphia firm OLC and hand-built in Cape Town, her interior furniture, tables, doors, and cabinetry alike, uses hand-made foam core construction with real wood veneers, maximizing weight savings while maintaining a premium finish.
A Salon Built for Visibility
The main salon’s raised sole gives 360-degree sightlines over the deck, whether seated or standing. The dinette table drops and extends into a full lounge or queen-sized watch bed, ideal for resting close to the helm on passage. A forward-facing nav station keeps Garmin electronics, steering mechanics, and Victron battery monitoring within easy reach.
The U-Shaped Galley
Designed for maximum security at sea, the large U-shaped galley features a deep single sink equipped with an integrated drying plate and utensil holder. Hand-crafted, custom storage cabinets and a dedicated pantry are paired with four Vitrifrigo refrigeration drawers, which can be independently configured as either fridges or freezers. Umoya is also completely propane-free; her all-electric induction cooktop and convection oven run entirely off the yacht’s massive lithium-ion battery bank and solar array, making cooking at sea clean, safe, and self-sustaining.
The Owner's Suite and Guest Accommodation
Umoya’s owners’ version accommodates up to six people for a long voyage. The starboard hull is dedicated entirely to the owner, with a large cabin in the forward section featuring a queen-sized island bed, ample storage, and a dedicated vanity area. Aft, the owner’s hull houses luxurious heads with Corian countertops and an enormous standalone shower.
The port hull accommodates four guests across two double cabins, one forward, one aft, sharing a central head with its own enclosed, stand-alone shower stall.
A Personal Touch
Owners Dave and Courtney chose light, plain-sawn American Oak with matte black trim as the interior’s foundation, then layered in vibrant, textured fabrics gathered from their travels. The result is an interior that feels personal and worldly rather than mass-produced, proof that performance and personality aren’t mutually exclusive aboard a Balance.

Step aboard Umoya for a full interior tour. Owners Dave and Courtney have made her home, decorating with colorful fabrics and decor collected from their travels. Her interior feels like that of a 50-foot catamaran.
A Boat That Feels Like Home
Umoya shows that performance and personality aren’t mutually exclusive. Beneath her wave-piercing bows and dual daggerboards is an interior shaped as much by her owners’ travels as by her builders’ craftsmanship, a reminder that a Balance is never just a hull and a sail plan, but a home built around the people who sail her.
