Introducing the Balance 540

The Balance 540 represents the bold evolution of our original flagship, the Balance 526, which launched in 2014. Over the past 11 years, the 526 has earned global recognition—winning races, receiving accolades, and most importantly, earning the loyalty of her owners. As the very first design Anton du Toit and Phil Berman created, the 526 marked the beginning of Balance Catamarans. To this day, we remain deeply proud of her sleek lines, high-performance sailing, and pioneering innovations such as the VersaHelm®.

A Year of Milestones

This year has already been momentous for us. We launched both the new Balance 580 and the flagship 750, with the 580 set to make her public debut in Cannes this week. Following that, the 502 will launch in November, and the first 464 is scheduled to splash in early 2026.

So after all this, naturally the next step was to design the successor to the 526 — the Balance 540. The goal was to build on the legacy of her predecessor while adding length, speed, performance, and fresh innovations.

Designed for Today’s Sailors

With advances across our model lineup — including Carbon Core fabrication, eDrive propulsion, the VersaStern, new rigging systems, and more — the 540 is now perfectly positioned between the agile 502 and the powerful 580. 

Though just under two feet longer than the 526, the Balance 540 offers a dramatic increase in volume – 25 percent more internal space – thanks to her expanded midships. That means more liveaboard comfort and a significant increase in storage capacity. This is the kind of space you rarely find in performance-oriented catamaran of this size.

But the 540 is more than just comfortable. She will be faster – an estimated 8 percent increase in speed over the 526 while still offering greater payload. How? A slightly wider waterline and a more powerful rig. Major structural elements are built from carbon fiber including a new longeron and crossbeam that keep weight low and strength high to ensure a responsive and stable ride in a range of conditions. 

Designing her was a true team effort. Phil Berman worked closely  with  Du Toit Yacht Design as always but St.  Francis’ Chief of Production Johnny Paarman added his incredible insight and deep experience as well. Together, we built a wish list for the 540, and topping that list was a four-cabin option, this one was frequently requested by 526 fans who wanted more room for family, friends, or crew.

The result is a wider, longer yacht that offers a truly luxurious owner’s cabin plus three additional staterooms if desired. She features a fore-and-aft galley in the salon and mirrors the cabin flexibility of the 580 — all while remaining easy to sail short-handed.

In every respect, the Balance 540 stays true to the spirit of the 526 while taking a major leap forward.

Looking Ahead

Tooling is nearly complete, and fabrication of the first hulls will begin soon. The launch schedule for the first seven 540s is already in place, and we couldn’t be more excited to see her come to life. Anton, Johnny, and I are immensely proud of what the 540 represents. She is the perfect evolution of our design philosophy: performance, balance, and beauty in harmony.
