We always appreciate when knowledgeable sailors take the time to explore our boats in depth especially when it’s a team as thoughtful and experienced as Sailing Ruby Rose.
During the 2023 Annapolis Boat Show, Nick and Theresa stepped aboard the Balance 442 for a detailed walkthrough and review. Their feedback offered us an outside perspective on what’s working well and where there’s room to grow.
A Fresh Take on the Balance 442
As content creators, Nick and Theresa are known for their honest and comprehensive boat reviews. They’ve seen just about everything the catamaran world has to offer, so we were honored when they singled out the Balance 442 as a standout in the 40–46-foot range.
From their very first moments at the VersaHelm™, it was clear they were intrigued by the performance-driven thinking that went into our design.

VersaHelm™ in the Spotlight
Nick opened their walkthrough at the VersaHelm™, the signature feature of the 442. As he pointed out, the helm provides an exceptional level of fingertip control, full protection in bad weather, and superior visibility when under sail.
That said, they were candid about the learning curve that comes with it especially during docking and noted that using the foot switches as part of the centralized control took them a moment.
Ergonomics are always subjective, and feedback like this helps us continue refining comfort and functionality in future models.
Living Spaces and Design Details
Theresa’s perspective highlighted the clean design and smart use of space, especially below deck. From the functional galley to the workshop-style utility area, the Balance 442’s interior made a strong impression.
She was particularly fond of the use of bamboo and sustainable materials, and praised the thoughtful aesthetic touches. However, she flagged that ventilation – always a concern in warmer climates for all boats caught her attention. Balance had already added custom options for its 442 model and its newer 464 models have added ventilation windows in the main salon as well as cabins.
Performance with Purpose
Both reviewers noted the quality of construction and layout choices that impact real-world sailing such as the straight jib track and ample deck space. These decisions are always made with performance sailing in mind, and we’re glad they were noticed and appreciated.
Windage and freeboard were also discussed, with fair acknowledgment that these trade-offs can affect handling in certain conditions. We’re always happy to have those discussions, as they reflect the realities of balancing comfort, volume, and performance.
Comparing with Ruby Rose 2
Naturally, Nick and Theresa couldn’t help but compare the Balance 442 to their own custom-built Ruby Rose 2. While every sailor’s priorities are different, they recognized the 442’s craftsmanship, versatility, and impressive finish as real strengths.
It was particularly rewarding to hear them describe the 442 as having a “wow factor.” We strive for every Balance Catamaran to leave that kind of lasting impression.
