Exploring the World of Balance Catamarans: Where Performance Meets Comfort
Welcome to Balance
Hello fellow sailors and adventurers! I’m Phil Berman, founder of Balance Catamarans, writing to you from the vibrant V&A Waterfront in Cape Town—where our journey truly began. Since launching our first Balance 526 in 2015, we’ve grown into a company defined not by volume, but by vision: to build boats that embody the perfect harmony between performance and comfort.
Today, I’d like to take you behind the scenes of who we are, what we believe in, and where we’re headed.
Finding Balance: The Origin Story
The roots of Balance Catamarans stretch back to my early passion for sailing Hobie Cats. That enthusiasm led me around the world—racing, writing books, and giving lectures. It was during the 1979 Hobie Cat World Championships, held here in South Africa, that I first witnessed the remarkable craftsmanship of local boatbuilders. That moment sparked a lifelong admiration for South African ingenuity—and planted the seed for what would eventually become Balance Catamarans.
At the time, the market was shifting. Production catamarans were getting heavier and slower, shaped by the needs of the charter trade. On the other end of the spectrum were high-speed, high-maintenance racing designs—often too fragile or complex for cruising couples. I saw a gap, and I wanted to fill it with a new kind of boat: fast, strong, beautiful, and practical. A boat that struck a true balance.
Crafting a Team—and a Vision
To build boats that lived up to that ideal, I needed a world-class team. Partnering with Jonathan Paarman and his family was a pivotal step. Their decades of experience in composites, boatbuilding, and craftsmanship aligned perfectly with our mission.
We never set out to mass-produce. Every Balance Catamaran is bespoke—handcrafted for serious sailors who value both performance and personalization. Even through the challenges of the COVID-19 era, demand has soared. As I write this, we have 44 boats under contract—a testament to the strength of our philosophy and the passion of our clients.
Our Expanding Lineup
From the start, our range has grown to meet the evolving needs of our owners:
- Balance 482 – Built in Cape Town under the direction of Mark Delany, who also oversees the 442.
- Balance 526, 580, and 620 – Manufactured at Nexus in St. Francis Bay, these models continue to set the bar for ocean-going performance and quality.
Each design reflects our core values: strength, speed, simplicity, and elegance.
A Transparent, Customer-Driven Approach
At Balance, our clients aren’t just customers—they’re partners. We believe in transparency throughout the build process, sharing in-depth video updates and progress documentation. We don’t rely on paid media or glossy advertorials. Instead, we let our owners tell the story—through their experiences, their voyages, and their trust.
Our boats aren’t just sold. They’re commissioned by people who want to understand what they’re getting, how it’s built, and who’s building it.
Built on Trust, Powered by Relationships
More than anything, Balance Catamarans is about relationships. We walk with our clients through every decision, from layout tweaks to performance options. Our goal is to make the experience as seamless and rewarding as the sailing itself.
We’re proud of the boats we build—but we’re even prouder of the community we’ve built around them.
Looking Ahead: A European Horizon
We’re excited to grow our footprint in Europe and showcase our designs at more international boat shows. The response so far has been inspiring—and we believe our focus on quality, customization, and honest craftsmanship will resonate with discerning European sailors.
Our promise is simple: what you see is what you get. No shortcuts, no gimmicks—just boats built to sail the way sailing should feel.
