Your Fitness Is Part of Your Safety Plan

Kaia Brown (of Balance 526 Loki) left a hard- driving career for a life at sea. Then built a fitness system specifically for sailors to ensure a lifetime of sailing

Staying fit while cruising means extending your voyage, your joy, and your experiences at sea.

Sounds great, right? But how do you do this while racking up the nautical miles in all conditions?

Kaia Brown is the owner of Balance 526 Loki and is in the process of moving aboard full-time. But before she was a sailor, she held a demanding 80-hour-a-week position that over time impacted her health. Stepping away wasn’t a lifestyle choice so much as a survival tactic. She moved her life to the water, and that’s where the real work began.

“I’m here to show you that your wellness doesn’t have to be the price you pay for a life of adventure.”

That personal experience became the foundation of New Horizons Fitness, a platform she created with a singular mission: to help sailors push back their “retirement date” from the sea by a decade.

Traditional fitness, she’ll tell you, doesn’t work for sailors. It assumes access to a  home gym, a stable floor, and a full kitchen. It assumes you’re not living on a moving deck, managing a watch schedule across time zones, or cooking out of a galley.

Pressure-tested at sea

So Kaia didn’t build her fitness methodology in a studio on land. Instead, she pressure-tested it during a 6,000-mile delivery passage, one leg of more than the 7,500 nautical miles she has logged overall – keeping the entire crew injury-free and high-performing in heavy seas. The result is what she calls the Horizon Method: a framework built around the idea that consistency over time beats perfection in the moment, and that your physical resilience is not separate from your seamanship – it’s part of it.

“Passage fatigue isn’t just a health issue,” she says. “It’s a safety issue.”

Built for your vessel, not a gym

The programs Kaia offers through New Horizons Fitness are engineered around what the body actually does on a boat. Lean & Limitless, her 12- week flagship program, is a comprehensive transformation blueprint designed to overhaul your “engine,” shed fat, build strength, and gain confidence. Each session includes built-in cardio, something that can be tough to fit in while underway. Expedition Core focuses on anti-rotation and anti-flexion training – the movement patterns that keep you stable when a swell hits or when you’re grinding a winch in a seaway. Sessions run under 10 minutes and are designed for the quarters of a cockpit or saloon. Both programs are available in minimal equipment/bodyweight and full-equipment formats. All programs can be downloaded for offline use.

Beyond the digital programs, Kaia offers 1:1 coaching, a Vessel Training Audit –  a professional review of your current routine through a maritime lens, tailored to your specific boat layout and cruising schedule  and a comprehensive Sailor’s Ultimate Fitness Guide.

Looking ahead, Kaia is building New Horizons Fitness into a global digital platform. This hub will provide sailors with practical resources, live workshops, and one-off “time-crunch” workouts for days when the passage schedule is tight but the need to move is high.

“Passage fatigue isn’t just a health issue,” she says. “It’s a safety issue.”

A resource for our community

As a Balance Catamaran owner, Kaia represents the kind of long-game thinking we see across our owner community which is rich with people who approach the cruising life with discipline and intention, and who want to keep doing it well for as long as possible. The question of physical longevity is one every serious offshore sailor thinks about, even if they don’t discuss it. Kaia has turned that question of “how do I stay fit doing something I love” into a business.

“Treat your body with the same respect you treat your rigging.”

Advises Kaia. “You wouldn’t set off on a 3,000-mile passage with a frayed main halyard, so don’t let your body be the weak link in your vessel’s float plan.” The best first step for any sailor is to move beyond the “restart when I’m home” cycle and start building a body that moves with the boat.

Ok, here is how to get started. Download the Ultimate Passage Checklist, a practical toolkit covering pre-passage preparation, packing, daily wellness anchors, and a post-passage reset framework.
