One of the things we value most at Balance Catamarans is hearing honest, unfiltered impressions from sailors who have no obligation to say nice things — and who have spent enough time at sea to know what truly matters.
That’s exactly why a recent episode from Warren and Erica of the WeSail YouTube channel stood out to us.
During their visit to the Annapolis Sailboat Show, a significant portion of their video was dedicated to walking through and sailing aboard a Balance Catamaran — and what followed was one of the most thoughtful, balanced, and experience-driven reflections we’ve heard.
A Trained Eye, Earned Offshore
Warren and Erica aren’t new to this world. After more than 25,000 nautical miles, years of full-time cruising, and hundreds of boats stepped aboard, they’ve developed what Warren calls a “fairly trained eye.”
In their words, what consistently draws them back to Balance is not marketing hype or surface-level features, but fundamentals:
Build quality
Straightforward systems and line organization
Interior space and real livability
Solid offshore seaworthiness
And crucially, how all of those elements come together without one being sacrificed for another.

The Meaning Behind the Name “Balance”
In the video, Warren draws a comparison between Balance and some of the world’s most performance-oriented catamarans — including HH and Gunboat — acknowledging their speed and innovation, but also pointing out where compromises often creep in.
What resonated most was this observation:
“Balance seems to have found a better balance between the big three considerations — performance, cost, and livability.”
As boats chase higher performance numbers, interior space, comfort, and storage are often the first things to disappear. Seeing experienced sailors recognize that Balance has resisted that trade-off reinforces exactly what the brand has stood for since the beginning.
VersaHelm: A Concept That’s Changing the Industry
One feature Warren called out specifically — and enthusiastically — was the VersaHelm.
Designed to rotate between a raised, high-visibility sailing position and a lowered, protected helm, VersaHelm reflects a core Balance philosophy: performance should never come at the cost of comfort or safety.
It was particularly telling to hear Warren note that this concept is now being adopted by other builders — something we’ve seen more and more in recent years.
“For good reason,” he adds. “It is genius.”
Performance Where It Counts
While Warren and Erica remain very happy with their current catamaran, they were candid about what they feel they’re missing — particularly upwind performance and speed.
That’s where Balance continues to stand apart.
With daggerboards, refined hull shapes, and a performance-driven design brief, Balance catamarans consistently deliver:

The Best Part? They Went Sailing
Perhaps the most meaningful moment in the episode wasn’t the walkthrough at all — it was the impromptu sunset sail aboard a Balance Catamaran with Darren and Amanda of Outer Passage.
For Erica, who had been off the water for nearly a year, it was a gentle, confidence-restoring return to sailing. For both of them, it was a reminder of why performance, ease of handling, and good design matter most when the lines are cast off.
Where Each Moment Took Place
While Warren and Erica don’t name the individual boats in their episode, their Annapolis experience spans three different Balance Catamarans, both dockside and under sail.
Most of the boat-show walkthrough footage was filmed aboard Emana, a Balance 442, highlighting the brand’s core design principles in a compact, performance-focused platform. They also spent time aboard Windigo, a Balance 580, showing how the same performance DNA scales into a larger, long-range cruising catamaran.
The sunset demo sail — a defining moment in the episode — took place aboard Pressure Drop, a Balance 526 currently sailing with Outer Passage’s “Try Before You Buy” program. It’s a real-world opportunity to experience a Balance under sail, not just at the dock.
Together, these three boats — the 442, 526, and 580 — reinforce the consistency of Balance’s design philosophy across the range.
